Carved from Basswood. Finished with an aged gold effect.
These types of carvings where once wildly popular in America. Carved mainly near coastal towns by shipbuilders and artists, these became something non sailors would hang in their homes. These could vary from Eagles, Signs, ornamental work and many other items. They slowly fell out of fashion into the twentieth century along with wooden ships.
One of the principal sculptors of this genre (and most sought after) was the work of John Bellamy. Very proficient in his work, many of his sculptures have disappeared over the years. But some rather prominent examples still exist.
I intend to do more of these in time and would happily take on commissioned work with this subject.
