Board Maintenance

Caring for Your Cutting Board

Proper maintenance will keep your cutting board beautiful and functional for years to come.

Daily Care

After each use, wash your board with warm soapy water and dry immediately with a clean towel. Always allow board to air dry with both top and bottom exposed to air to prevent warping.

Monthly Conditioning

Apply board conditioner monthly to prevent drying and cracking. Sagamore Wood Shop makes its own blend of board conditioner that contains food safe materials,  special blend of oil and waxes. Apply the finish liberally and allow to soak in before buffing off. There are additional board conditioners available on the market and the methods for application may vary. Food safe mineral oil can also be used in moderation. Store cutting board on its side, either vertically or horizontally to allow air to pass around the surface to mitigate warping.

Deep Cleaning

For stubborn stains or odors, scrub with coarse salt and half a lemon, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

Warning

Do not put cutting boards or any wooden kitchen utensils in a dishwasher. It will damage the board. The damage is quite obvious and unique and will void any warranty on these products. All cutting boards will show knife marks on them in time. That's unavoidable. Wood is a natural product and will absorb moisture from the air depending on the humidity. Treating the boards with a good conditioner will reduce this action. Cutting boards are made of natural woods which contain antibiotic elements that can kill bacteria from raw meats unlike plastic boards. And will not dull your knives as easily as a metal or glass board will.
